Snowfall:
High altitude areas of Gilgit Baltistan have been receiving snow for last three
days, disrupting routine of local people and leaving many remote parts
disconnected from rest of the region.
The Babusar
road also has been closed to vehicular traffic due to snowfall, with the
temperature in the area dipping to minus 7 Celsius. The electricity shortfall
has started deepening as generation in the area depends on water flow in the
channels, but glaciers have seized to melt due to arrival of winter.
Authorities
said Babusar top had received six to seven inches of snow. Besides, Ghanche,
Skardu, Astore, have also received snowfall. An official of GB food department
told media that the department would dispatch basic commodities of life,
including wheat, to the snow-bound areas in Skardu, Astore and Hunza-Nagar
districts.
The official
said wheat to be dispatched to the villages was already stocked in government
stores of the respective villages.
